Led module integrated into a designer's luminaire. This self-cooled direct AC light engine was custom made for a design pendant lamp which needed a compact, cost-effective high-flux light source.
The customer had a Pendant lamp with a light flux distributed in three different directions: ceiling, traversal through the lamp body and a central spot light. The product was developed for the international market and two version were needed, 230V and 120V.

The prototype had a machined aluminium heat sink with two LEDs modules of metal core PCB, one for the ceiling and the other for the body light. A second heat sink was used for the spot light.
Apart from weight and cost of the system, they also had a problem hiding the two heat sinks and the power supply.
High power LEDs have been substituted with mid-powers and distributed according to the optical requirement. Three FR4 PCBs have been engineered to withstand operation at 230V, drive the LEDs, dissipate all the heat produced and at the same time to distribute light uniformly. A polycarbonate enclosure provided of vents was designed by the customer to house the three PCBs.
The final result is an LED pendant lamp with a clean design thanks to the self-cooled direct AC light engine.
